WE HAVE BEEN MORE THAN A BLESSING TO UNEC AND ITS STUDENTS - SUG UNEC PRESIDENT

*Student's Union Government, University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus*

*THE PRESIDENT*
Good evening great LIONS and LIONESSES. Exactly one year today I was sworn in together with the members of my executive council to defend and protect your rights.

It was a difficult, daunting task, but we  remained positive throughout and now we're leaving UNEC SUG better than we met it. We give God almighty all the glory for being with us and seeing us through the rough road of unionism - the sleepless nights, always being on the road, meetings here and there, etc. Indeed he has been a faithful God.

During the course of our administration we kept on working to add value to our lives, and give meaning to our presence within the four walls of this great citadel of learning. We were able to to organise the first ever SUG Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Mentorship Summit (LEMS) in UNEC and _till date even the apex student union body in nigeria National association of Nigeria students (NANS) have copied that idea._

Through the office of director of welfare we were able to organise an anti-bedbug campaign in Lady Ibiam hostel when they had a bed bug crisis.

Through the office of the Director of socials we organised two film shows and Ibiam lapshot. All of which were aimed to give students a welcome diversion from stressful academic endeavours.

We also attracted the Close Up *#coollikethat* party that saw us have Rekardo Banks, One of Nigeria's finest musicians in UNEC. We also partnered with Tummy Tummy to bring humble Smith to UNEC.

We returned *SUG Week* back to UNEC in grand style and worked hard to give UNEC the best SUG week it has ever experienced in recent history. Our week featured an SUG Suya night, an SUG Award night, a Financial summit, a Health summit and an SUG British parliamentary debate.

We prevented what could have been the highest school fees increase in the history of the university with firm opposition that engendered a change in the University Administration's plans and resulted in very little increment. This we did by providing compelling arguments with reasons, facts and figures as opposed to a resort to  violence because we believed that one is remembered for what he builds not what he destroys. And also because modern day Unionism is founded on dialogue and exchange of ideas and has gone beyond belligerence or the "eye to eye" approach.

Also during this NASU strike we have cooperated with the school authority to hire external engineers to ensure that our generator is operated especially as the strike came on the heels of our exams.

We partnered with United Bank of Africa (UBA) to give us 30 days free transportation within the campus. We also published the first ever SUG Roar magazine.

Most importantly we have returned peace to UNEC and as result of that the school has listened to most of our prayers. The Vice Chancellor paid attention to most of our complaints. That can be seen in the dual carriage school gate road he renovated,  the SUG vehicle he gave us after. As a result of the peace in UNEC in our tenure the Vice Chancellor gave UNEC four water tankers. With these tankers we have been having free water in the school at least twice a week. It have not been like this before. He also gave us a brand new sewage collector. Because we choose to be peaceful and diplomatic the deputy Vice Chancellor UNEC went  out of his way to find external sponsors to fix the sporting facilities beside access  bank. All of these are for own benefit and that is what you get when you say no violence.

We may have not been able to do everything  but we have given our best and have worked with the best interests of students at heart and I make to boldly state that we stand taller and better than our contemporaries. The facts speaks for itself.

But we could have not been able to do all these without your support, prayers and cooperation. I must specially appreciate the Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt.Hon. Chinese Obasi. Obasi you are a great leader. Your support was amazing. I salute all The Honourable members for their cooperation. The Chief Judge, Lord justice David Precious (DPO) you stood with Executive Council strongly during the school fees negotiation that lasted over four months. Indeed you are a leader. The Senate President, Distinguished Senator Asogwa Izuchukwu and the entire UNEC senators, we thank you all for the sacrifices you made towards making this administration a scuccess.

I must never fail to say very big thank you to our dogged, ever loving, honest and promise keeping Vice Chancellor, Prof B.C Ozumba. Sir, we sincerely thank you for everything. You tolerated our excesses and you paid attention to our needs. May God bless you and your family. The Deputy Vice Chancellor UNEC, Prof. Smart Uchegbu, Prof we thank you such for your amazing support.  The Associate Dean Students Affairs, Prof. Edith Nwosu, there is nothing that we will write that will actually show  the kind of love you have for us . May God bless you and your family.

We thank everybody and we believe that the next administration will do better. We also pray all of us support them and join hands with them to build a better UNEC.
